CERAMIC

Presented by Szeer Studio.

BACKGROUND HISTORY

Jingdezhen(景德鎮) can be considered the origin of the word "China," derived from the Latin term Sinae, meaning "the land of porcelain." Dating back to 1,400 years ago, the Tang Dynasty marked a peak in Chinese ceramic development. The kilns of Jingdezhen in Jiangxi Province supplied ceramics to the imperial family, becoming the most influential production centre. Its technology and aesthetics reached the peak during the Song Dynasty since AD960. Jingdezhen could be regarded as one of the earliest industrialised towns in the world. No other kiln has such a long and continuous history. Starting with the Mongol emperors of the Yuan Dynasty in 1260, Jingdezhen established official porcelain factories. The porcelain produced there was extensively sold in domestic and overseas markets. Qinghua(青花) porcelain became the first "globalized commodity," highly sought after from Tokyo to Timbuktu and widely imitated in many regions along its trade routes.

Every child in Chinese family knows porcelain is synonymous with Jingdezhen, and Jingdezhen is synonymous with porcelain.

WORKSHOPS WE'VE TALKED

The earliest ceramics were created as imitations of jade, often referred to as "false jade," using ordinary materials to pursue an ideal of infinite perfection. This intent led to the ultimate expression of craftsmanship and the necessity of its transmission. To ensure perfection at every stage, each craftsman held a specific role, often dedicating their entire life to it. Sometimes, even on a single piece, one artisan would paint plum blossoms while another painted bamboo. To this day, Jingdezhen artisans remain exceptionally skilled in creating flawless finished products through a purely handmade assembly line, rather than using ceramic art as an expressive medium. This meticulous craftsmanship has established Jingdezhen's unparalleled reputation for quality. We also visited lacquerware and curium porcelain, which became the origin of the Japanese style of object mourning and wabi-sabi around 1578, when people began to accept imperfect porcelain and curium porcelain (the predecessor of kanji).

THE STUDENTS AND
YOUNGS WE MET
ON THE WAY

The dedication of artisans to their craft has laid a high foundation and set rigorous standards for Jingdezhen's ceramics industry. Unique local techniques and materials have become the medium through which artists express their creative pursuits. The reinvention of ceramic art concepts now rests in the hands of students and young people.

During this journey, we encountered many students. After completing their studies, they collaborated to establish their own studios, participated regularly in local markets, and continually honed their skills and aesthetics. They move forward in the direction of their dreams, holding firm to the belief that "anything can be achieved in this world."

OUR WORKSHOP

COLLABORATOR, CERAMIC·ISM

"Exploring the boundless inclusivity of ceramic art."

In collaboration with Szeer Studio, our workshop partners with CERAMIC·ISM, an officially affiliated studio of Jingdezhen Ceramic University, to provide production and technical support.

CERAMIC·ISM believes that the essence of ceramic art lies not only in the functionality of objects but also in the imagination and creativity unleashed through the creator's interaction with clay. Its mission is to deeply integrate ceramics, aesthetics, and art therapy, giving ceramic techniques a dual significance of technical skill and artistic sensibility.

Handcrafting not only soothes the anxieties of time but also endows each piece with a unique soul.
